Habits shape the world around us and impact our lives. That’s why at the Boys & Girls Clubs we are dedicated to instilling Healthy Habits with our members. Healthy Habits is a program written to build behaviors essential to an overall balanced lifestyle centered around healthy eating, physical activity, and relationship building.
The 14 lessons teach youth how decisions impact their health. “The overall goal of the program is to equip youth with the knowledge and confidence to make choices that will help them live a healthier lifestyle,” says BGCCW Academic Outreach Coordinator, Amanda Montes.
Club members learn through hands-on activities such as reading nutrition labels and measuring the amount of sugar in food. While learning to eat properly, Club kids also implement physical activities.
“Members often hear adults tell them to eat healthy,” Nicole Arner, Paradise Valley Director stated, “but Healthy Habits interactive lessons show why it’s important to be healthy and how to do it!”
These lessons are more than just choosing the right foods. Everything from the importance of building relationships and setting goals to correctly brushing your teeth is taught. Nutrition skills, social-emotional skills, and movement teach youth how to thrive in their communities, schools, organizations, peer groups, and families. Lessons are tailored to groups by age.
Healthy Habits promotes positive outcomes for young people by providing opportunities, fostering positive relationships, and furnishing the support needed to build on their leadership strengths. This program is sponsored in part by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Wyoming Caring Foundation.
